Who we ROOT for: MARLEY
Meet Marley, the first candidate chosen to receive support from Hope Rooted! Marley is an amazing, intelligent, creative, beautiful 9 year old girl. She enjoys hockey, Girl Scouts, water sports and writing stories. She is loved and adored by her family, but she and her family need our help.
Marley contracted a simple streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat) when she was four years old. What should have been a simple illness and recovery quickly escalated into what can only be described as a nightmare of symptoms and downward spiral of her immune system. Marley began having difficulties at school, not listening, trouble eating, recurrent illnesses, tantrums, bedwetting and more. Up to that point she had been a happy, excited, eager beautiful little girl. Marley’s parents were left devastated. They could not fathom how and why such changes were occurring in their sweet, tender hearted child.
After what can only be described as a difficult family trip in 2015, Marley’s parents realized that their daughters symptoms were not improving, in fact, they were getting much worse. Simply going out to eat or playing a game as a family turned into a stressful situation. Marley’s brain could not handle certain circumstances. Outbursts would come out of nowhere and without warning. Following these uncontrolled scenarios, Marley has feelings of guilt and remorse. She does not want to behave in this way. Her illness controls this vicious cycle.
After a visit to a local behavioral and developmental clinic, Marley was diagnosed with a condition called Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections or PANDAS for short. PANDAS causes a misdirected immune response that results in inflammation on a child’s brain. In turn, the child quickly begins to exhibit life changing symptoms such as OCD, anxiety, tics, personality changes, decline in math and handwriting abilities, sensory sensitivities, restrictive eating, and more. It is estimated that PANDAS affects as many as 1 in 200 children.
Since the diagnosis of PANDAS, Marley’s parents have sought help from pediatricians, therapists, natural medicine, diet changes, food therapy and supplements to get their daughter back and assist Marley in feeling in control of her emotions once again. These things have all had a positive impact, but Marley needs more help. This is a chronic condition that requires specialized healing protocols. Currently, PANDAS/ PANS treatment is not well known, meaning insurance will not cover any treatment expenses. Patients are forced to pay up to $1,000 per appointment with a specialist.
Marley received a Hope Rooted grant in November 2017. Your financial support has already had a positive impact in healing Marley’s illness. Here is her update as of March 2018.
Marley was the recipient of a Hope Rooted grant back in November and is well on her way to healing thanks to supporters like you. We had the opportunity to speak with her parents this week to get an update on her healing.
Marley was diagnosed with PANDAS and needed access to specialized healing protocols. Below are some of the improvements they are seeing after only a few months:
-Behavioral outbursts have become less frequent and less severe.
-Increased ability to cope with transitions and flares.
-Significant decrease in absences from school due to illness.
-No fevers since January (fevers use to be reoccurring).
Marley’s parents are tremendously grateful for the improvements they are seeing in Marley. She has a journey in front of her, but her progress gives them hope.
